Nvidia announces investment of up to $100 billion in OpenAI to jointly build a 10 gigawatt AI data center
Recently, Nvidia and OpenAI announced a milestone strategic partnership, in which Nvidia will invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI to jointly build a large-scale AI data center and provide powerful computing power support for the next generation of AI models.
According to the agreement, OpenAI will utilize Nvidia systems to build and deploy at least 10 gigawatts of AI data centers for training and running next-generation AI models. This electricity consumption is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 8 million households in the United States. NVIDIA CEO Huang Renxun stated that the 10 gigawatt AI data center will adopt NVIDIA systems, including millions of NVIDIA GPUs.
The investment will gradually proceed according to the deployment schedule, with the first $10 billion investment to be made when the first gigawatt data center is completed. The first phase is expected to be launched in the second half of 2026, based on Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform. Both parties stated that they will finalize the details of the cooperation in the coming weeks.
Nvidia founder and CEO, Renxun Huang, said: "Over the past decade, NVIDIA and OpenAI have been mutually reinforcing, from the first DGX supercomputer to the breakthrough of ChatGPT.
This investment and infrastructure cooperation marks a new step forward for us, deploying 10 gigawatts of computing power and driving the next era of intelligence. ”OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman said, "It all starts with computing. Computing infrastructure will become the foundation of the future economy, and we will leverage the achievements we have built together with NVIDIA to create new AI breakthroughs while empowering individuals and businesses on a large scale. ” OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman said, "Since OpenAI was founded, we have been working closely with NVIDIA. We have built AI systems that billions of people use every day using NVIDIA's platform. We are delighted to deploy 10 gigawatts of computing power with NVIDIA to break through the forefront of intelligence and benefit everyone with this technology. ”
This cooperation has significant strategic implications for Nvidia. Nvidia's capital injection not only provides OpenAI with the capital to purchase high-end chips, but also ensures that these chips are eventually returned to its own ecosystem through collaborative projects, forming a unique business closed loop.
